Molekula: Rijeka Croatia Summer 2010
The Faulconer Gallery: Grinnell, IA, USA Fall 2010

EXHIBITION DESCRIPTION:

Ideal X uses the motif of the international shipping container as a platform for cross-cultural and creative exchange between the Midwestern United States and Rijeka, Croatia.

The first ship to use intermodal containers was called Ideal X and revolutionized shipping by keeping cargo in the same container from train to ship to truck to final destination. Today these containers are used to transport everything from agricultural products, to toys, to weapons. As they speed by on ships or trucks, we have no idea what is officially or illegally inside them. From international ports to rural warehouses, shipping containers link the world.

In this exhibition The Moving Crew, an artists’ collective with members in both the US and Croatia, will construct 1800 cardboard boxes that when assembled and stacked form the volume of an actual shipping container. Through community workshops throughout the Midwest and Rijeka these boxes will be hand screen printed with artists’ designs transforming them into small versions of shipping containers. Using a website and these public workshops The Moving Crew will collect statements from the public about what is in these fictional containers, and inside the actual containers we see every day.

The generation of these boxes, and this international conversation, will culminate in exhibitions and performances in both countries at Molekula in Rijeka, Croatia, Summer 2010 and at the Faulconer Gallery in Grinnell, Iowa, Fall 2010.

Fact:

Some Intermodal Shipping Containers are 8.5 X 20 X 8 feet:
(Height) 2.591 m X (Length) 6.096 m X (Width) 2.4384 m:

What we need from you:

Designs for small shipping containers!
Our custom made cardboard boxes are 8.5 X 20 X 8 inches:
21.59 cm x 50.8 cm x 2o.32 cm:

You may submit separate images
in any or all of the 4 categories.

1) Company Identity: These identities could be fictional, but should reference actual shipping containers.

2) Graffiti

3) Surface (ie. rust and damage, barnacles, hinges and latches, texture, etc?)

4) Barcodes and numbers

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
We will take your digital files and convert them to film. This film will then be used to create a silkscreen of your image. The Moving Crew will hold community screen printing workshops throughout the midwestern United States and Rijeka Croatia to create 1800 miniature shipping containers. These containers will be the primary object in the Ideal X exhibition.

The Moving Crew prints it for you!
The Moving Crew and members of the general public will print your single color images on multiple colored backgrounds. NOTE: The surfaces of these boxes are collaborative. Each box printed with your image may also contain other images. (i.e. your company identity may be printed with rust, a barcode, and graffiti from another artist.)

HOW DO I SUBMIT IMAGES?

Send the following to: themovingcrew@gmail.com

1) JPG, Illustrator or Photoshop files. Since our exposure process requires a decisively opaque black image, anything that is more nuanced will be filtered to translate a continuous tone into ‘yes or no’ information. This will be done using Photoshop with one of the following filters: halftone, bitmap, diffusion dither, threshold, posterization etc. If you have questions about this please email: themovingcrew@gmail.com

2) Your Image IN BLACK ONLY composed within a 20 X 8.5 OR 8 X 8.5 canvas

3) Image Resolution: 300 DPI

4) Images must be labeled with your name and the category you are submitting in. For instance if Sarah Jones is submitting an image of Graffiti her image file is called: S.Jones_Graffiti

5) Your Full Name, Address, Email and Phone Number so that we can get in touch with you and send you a catalog.
